An interview is not a one-person thing. It is a situation whereby two parties exchange ideas. Therefore, after a nursing interview, you may be given a chance to ask questions about anything on the health facility and the job you are looking for. This article presents some common questions to ask during this rigorous process. This may be a sign that you already won the opportunity, so you need to be wise about it.

  1. a) What is the culture of your facility?

Culture plays a very pivotal role in any nursing practice. This encompasses ideas on how the team works to achieve the organizational goals. You need to have a glimpse of this so you can fit with the rest.

  1. b) Do you provide any training?

This should make you aware of whether the organization offers any training before being handed the ideal job. It would be good for you to know this, so you get psychologically prepared. Most organizations, however, provide some training to its new employees, but you need not be the one dictating this.

  1. c) How long do your shifts take?

This question will help you know the expected workload if, at all, you become the one taking over the job. Most facilities offer shifts that range from 8-12 hours. Therefore, you will need to take a keen interest in this.

  1. d) What are your staffing ratios?

This relates directly to the expected workload. Can you imagine a facility whereby the ratio is one nurse to 40 patients? Besides, you ought to find out whether other support staff are present. You will need some allowance to freshen up, so you can provide effective medical care, and too much pressure from work may hinder this.

  1. e) Does your organization have an on-call requirement?

This is because you may, at times, be required to be on the call alongside potential regular shifts. In the case whereby you already have prior information that the organization has over time, a possibility of mandatory on-calls may still hold. You also need to know the number of people who are needed to be on call and of course the payment amount given for such an on-call work.

  1. f) Which EMR system do you adopt?

As a nurse, you need to know the kind of EMR systems used in the facility. This is to help you prepare just in case they use a system that you are not conversant with. You may need to train on it because the lack of pertinent knowledge may slow down your productivity.

An interviewee should always be confident and part of the conversation by asking questions that help him/her understand their prospective working environment.
